That sentiment sums up what for many B&B travelers and hosts, is the reason to stay at a Maine Bed and Breakfast. Maine Bed and Breakfast guests choose where to stay based upon many individual personal criteria. B&B travelers look at factors as varied as the B&B hosts, to houses and architectural styles; gardens as a factor; bedding; towns verses country inns; secluded verses active; the types of activities that can be found at or around Maine Bed and Breakfasts; outdoor activities; site seeing; dining; as well as B&B food; not to mention the breakfast included with the room!

Some B&B travelers who will choose a different one each time to get to know all the hosts in a place, and then return to the one they felt most comfortable with. Many such as Thomas Jefferson urged America to adopt a style of house building that did not imitate Europe. Arguably the one style that is truly uniquely American is the Greek Revival or "temple house". Decorated with ornate doorways, wooden columns, and angular peaked roofs, white painted clapboards and shuttered windows, these homey comfortable classics are sure to give the Maine bed and breakfast guest the feeling of living in Maine while visiting.

Maine Bed and Breakfasts: Location

Maine's 1.3 million people are spread out over an area of about 31,000 square miles. Although many of those people are concentrated on the coast, even there, you won't tend to feel crowded. Portland, Maine's largest city has a population of only about 63,000 people. In such a large state with so few people, many communities don't appear to be communities to the visiting guest. So unless you are careful which Maine Bed and Breakfast you choose, you may expect something completely different than what you find when you arrive. Are you interested in staying near the water? Does it matter if there is anything within walking distance of the B&B? Is the bed and breakfast near an urban district or a quaint town? What many people don't expect when they select a place to stay, is how remote some of the B&Bs are from anything. If that is what you expect, and your itinerary consists of day trips by car, using the B&B as a homebase, or the B&B is a waystop on the road to someplace else, then your expectations will not be disappointed. However, if when you choose a Maine bed and breakfast you expect to walk to dinner, or shops, or a harbor, or lake, then make sure that where the B&B is situated will assist you in those plans. Maine Bed and Breakfasts: The Guest

A convention of Bed and Breakfasts that most veteran B&B travelers understand is that the owners are your hosts. You are meant to feel as though you are a guest in someone's home, rather than an anonymous traveler checking into a hotel. While a paying guest has a right to expect every amenity of the house, this convention also places upon the guest the traditional obligations of a guest in someone's home. Most travelers understand what that means, but some who are new to staying at Maine Bed and Breakfasts are surprised to learn that, for instance, most B&B's don't have night clerks to check in late arrivals. They may not be able to accommodate early check ins or late check outs, because they may or may not have a staff, but may do all the work themselves. As with any hand made product, the sameness that one might expect in the cookie cutter world of corporate lodging doesn't apply to Maine bed and breakfasts. The way the house is managed, as well as the kinds of amenities offered will vary from B&B to B&B: Is there separate heat in every room? Is there cable television? Is there air conditioning? Because every B&B is different, and different guests value different amenities, you should get a sense of what you are looking for when shopping for a B&B to stay in.
