As one B&B guest remarked to his host, "I stay at Maine Bed and Breakfasts because I enjoy having my lodging be a part of the experience. It's not just a place to sleep at night!" That sentiment sums up what for many B&B travelers and hosts, is the reason to stay at a Maine Bed and Breakfast. Maine Bed and Breakfast guests choose where to stay based upon many individual personal criteria. B&B travelers look at factors as varied as the B&B hosts, to houses and architectural styles; gardens as a factor; bedding; towns verses country inns; secluded verses active; the types of activities that can be found at or around Maine Bed and Breakfasts; outdoor activities; site seeing; dining; as well as B&B food; not to mention the breakfast included with the room!
As most B&B aficionados know, bed and breakfasts offer unique lodging experiences. The owners and innkeepers who host Maine Bed and Breakfast guests are all very different and have different ideas of how to make guests feel comfortable at their lodging. Quite the opposite of the corporate hotel experience, B&B hosts tend to try to express their individual personalities in their lodging. From young idealistic couples looking to get back to the land, to retired executives, single married, old, young, artists, mothers, and fathers, there are all kinds of people who host folks in their B&B homes. Some are gourmet chefs, some have a knack for decorating, some collect antiques, some are dedicated to the restoration of historic buildings. How do you get a sense of who these people are? Most Maine bed and breakfasts give at least a hint of the character of their hosts on their websites. Most B&B websites have a page or a paragraph dedicated to "about us" or "about your host" or whoever it is who will be welcoming you. Since the hosts are a big part of the b&B experience, you might want to check out pages that introduce the innkeepers. Since there are all kinds of people hosting these lodgings, you have a choice. Some B&B travelers who will choose a different one each time to get to know all the hosts in a place, and then return to the one they felt most comfortable with. The Camden Windward House B&B, certainly qualifying as a Maine Bed & breakfast, is hosted by a couple in their thirties, with three children. They come from large kitchen-oriented families, and tend to expend most of their hosting efforts toward trying to make people feel at home.
In addition to unique hosts, Maine's Bed and Breakfasts lodgings themselves can't help but express their uniqueness. Maine has a wealth of historic homes that host guests as Maine bed and breakfasts. From venerable simple Federal style homes, to garishly painted Victorians, restored grand sea captain's mansions from the era of Maine's domination of trade and shipbuilding in America, to the fantastic flights of fancy of the eccentric wealthy of a bygone era. You can find just about any type of home used as a Maine bed & breakfast. One home style that many feel typifies Maine is the Greek revival. Many Greek Revival style homes were built during the period from Maine's statehood to the American revolution, and are the product of a golden age of prosperity in Maine. During the early years of American democracy many of the new Nation's leading figures were casting about for an architectural style that might better express its democratic ideals. Many such as Thomas Jefferson urged America to adopt a style of house building that did not imitate Europe. Arguably the one style that is truly uniquely American is the Greek Revival or "temple house". Decorated with ornate doorways, wooden columns, and angular peaked roofs, white painted clapboards and shuttered windows, these homey comfortable classics are sure to give the Maine bed and breakfast guest the feeling of living in Maine while visiting.
Maine's 1.3 million people are spread out over an area of about 31,000 square miles. Although many of those people are concentrated on the coast, even there, you won't tend to feel crowded. Portland, Maine's largest city has a population of only about 63,000 people. In such a large state with so few people, many communities don't appear to be communities to the visiting guest. So unless you are careful which Maine Bed and Breakfast you choose, you may expect something completely different than what you find when you arrive. Are you interested in staying near the water? Does it matter if there is anything within walking distance of the B&B? Is the bed and breakfast near an urban district or a quaint town? Are you interested in solitude or do you like to see other people around? Would you like to park your car for a while and enjoy the town on foot?
What many people don't expect when they select a place to stay, is how remote some of the B&Bs are from anything. If that is what you expect, and your itinerary consists of day trips by car, using the B&B as a homebase, or the B&B is a waystop on the road to someplace else, then your expectations will not be disappointed. However, if when you choose a Maine bed and breakfast you expect to walk to dinner, or shops, or a harbor, or lake, then make sure that where the B&B is situated will assist you in those plans. Many people choose to stay in Camden Maine Bed and Breakfasts exactly for that reason. Camden is the Maine coast in microcosm. Great views, rocky beaches, a scenic harbor with historic boats, galleries and great restaurants are all within walking distance of most Camden Maine bed and breakfasts. Because Camden is a town of approximately 5000 people that has maintained at great pains much of its historic beauty, it is a favorite spot of those seeking to find a place seemingly left back in time. Camden Maine is full of quiet tree lined streets full of impeccably tended gardens surrounding historic homes. From the beautiful Camden Hills state park, you may view the Penobscot Bay and many of its islands. You may also tour Pen Bay from the deck of a tall masted schooner. And when you are finished touring or hiking or biking or kayaking, you may walk from your Bed and Breakfast down to one of our great restaurants, window shopping the galleries and shops along the way. Did you know that Camden Maine, out of the entire state of Maine, had three of its local chefs from Camden Maine restaurants selected as finalists in the "best Lobster Chef of Maine" competition in 2008? In such a small town, having so many great chefs says a lot for the quality of the cuisine in Camden Maine.
Most B&Bs make an effort to afford their guests comfortable bedding. High thread count sheets, ironing, ornate decorations and bedclothes, configurations including pillows of varying shapes and sizes, as well as antique beds are some of the things B&B guests call their prospective hosts and ask about.
Maine bed and breakfasts, like those of other places offer a wide variety of food. Most offer one item, so that all guests have the same thing for breakfast. Some, chef-owned Maine bed and breakfasts will have very elaborate gourmet breakfasts. Some appoint breakfast times to the guests, to permit a smooth flow of breakfasters. The Camden Windward House offers a menu of comfort foods made from fresh local ingredients with an added daily special. Coffee is important to the hosts of Windward House, so fresh brewed gourmet coffee is always offered. With a 2 and one half hour breakfast period Windward House guests enjoy ample time to come to breakfast at their own pace without appointed times. Many B&Bs offer home baked goodies at tea time or throughout the day. This is another way that some hosts make their guests feel at home during their visits to Maine. There is almost nothing more welcoming than the smell of baking cookies.
A convention of Bed and Breakfasts that most veteran B&B travelers understand is that the owners are your hosts. You are meant to feel as though you are a guest in someone's home, rather than an anonymous traveler checking into a hotel. While a paying guest has a right to expect every amenity of the house, this convention also places upon the guest the traditional obligations of a guest in someone's home. Most travelers understand what that means, but some who are new to staying at Maine Bed and Breakfasts are surprised to learn that, for instance, most B&B's don't have night clerks to check in late arrivals. They may not be able to accommodate early check ins or late check outs, because they may or may not have a staff, but may do all the work themselves. As with any hand made product, the sameness that one might expect in the cookie cutter world of corporate lodging doesn't apply to Maine bed and breakfasts. The way the house is managed, as well as the kinds of amenities offered will vary from B&B to B&B: Is there separate heat in every room? Is there cable television? Is there air conditioning? Because every B&B is different, and different guests value different amenities, you should get a sense of what you are looking for when shopping for a B&B to stay in. They are all different, but that is the reason why a traveler might choose a B&B over a hotel. Or perhaps you'd rather check out other Camden Maine Lodging options.
