maine green lodging

The Camden Windward House in May 2008 was acknowledged by the State of Maine as Environmental Leader in Hospitality. Following is our Environmental Policy:

As a Maine Certified Green Lodging and out of respect for our natural resources — we, the employees of The Camden Windward House, pledge to do the following:

  • Properly manage our resource consumption and reduce our waste.
  • Encourage our guests and owners to “Reduce, Reuse and Recycle” and continue to seek ways to make this easier for them. Make them aware of our Environmental Policy and request their participation.
  • Ensure that each employee recognizes his or her role and responsibility in our GREEN efforts.
  • Increase safety for and promote the health of our employees, owners and guests.
  • Educate ourselves about our suppliers and the products we purchase in an effort to further reduce our environmental impact.
  • Promote awareness of the consequences of our actions and their direct effect on our natural world.
  • Continue to strive to find more ways to improve our policy and procedures to further reduce our impact.

Some of the environmental initiatives The Camden Windward House has implemented thus far include:
  • Towel & Linen ReUse Programs
  • Suggestions in each unit for conservation (water & energy)
  • Recycle in units and on property
  • Outdoor lighting uses timers
  • Purchase energy efficient appliances
  • Practicing Enriching (planting native plants that require less water)
  • Utilize mulch and minimum 80% organic fertilizer
  • Purchase in bulk and/or concentrate and refill bottles where possible
  • Bar soap is no longer used and dispensers have been put by every sink and every shower.
  • Computer Disks, ink cartridges, high efficiency light bulbs and tvs are recycled and disposed of properly
  • Laundry detergent is biodegradable no phosphates, NPE, or nonionic surfactants
  • Recycle bins will be distributed throughout the Bed and Breakfast.
  • Local farms & ingredients are chosen first when planning meals.
  • Our gift shop only has natural ingredient products
  • We have made heating zones in the house to control the use of heat.

Some of the more specific environmentally correct things we are doing: We are using Clorox Green Works Products to Clean the Inn. We use Benjamin Moore Aura Paint to repaint our rooms. If a light bulb goes out - we are replacing it with an energy efficient bulb. We have purchased LG energy efficient Washer and dryers, and a Bosch energy efficient Dish Washer. We now host Green weddings (call to ask more about this). Our garden this year(so far) has: Basil, Parsley, Lettuce, Peas, tomatoes, eggplant, peppers, strawberries. Last year we grew corn - that was real fun. We use only Fair Trade Coffee.

Green Cleaning tip: TEA is the only thing you need to clean wood floors. Brew 2 tea bags pour into a bucket of water and wash the floors. RInsing is not necessary. Being in an Inn - this is so great because we always have tea!
