Mt. Battie Trail
This trail is located right in our own backyard! Exit our back driveway and take the road behind us (Megunticook St) up to the top where you will find the Mt. Battie Trailhead. We break this hike into thirds. The first 1/3 is a steady incline. The second 1/3 has you scrambling up some hills and rocks. The final 1/3 returns to a steady incline. If you take the trail up and back it is about a 1.1-mile round trip. If you don’t want to come back down the trail, you can pick up the auto road at the top and take that back down. If you do that, it is about a 4-mile round trip back to Windward House. We’d categorize this hike as moderate to hard. If you want to hike to the top but this hike scares you, try the Old Carriage Trail below.
Mt. Megunticook Trail
This trailhead is located in Camden Hills State Park. Take High Street/Route 1 North 1.5 miles to the park entrance. You can either park by the ticket booth and then walk the auto road to the trail entrance or you can take your car up the auto road to the parking area outside the trail entrance. This trail will take you a couple of hours of moderate but steady climbing. It will bring you to the Ocean Lookout where you will see beautiful views of the bay and Camden. This trail makes Mt. Battie look like an ant hill!
Maiden's Cliff
This trail is located a little further up from the Old Carriage Trail on Mountain Ave, about 3.5 miles from Camden Windward House. A parking lot is located at the trailhead. The hike is a moderate steady climb up to the top where you will find a white cross in honor of 11-year-old Elenora French, as well as beautiful views of Lake Megunticook.
Old Carriage Trail
This trail is located a little over a mile from Camden Windward House up Mountain Ave/Route 52. Parking is located along Mountain Ave. The trail is a steady incline up to the top of Mt. Battie. If the Mt. Battie trail intimidates you, then this is the trail for you. It will take about 2 hours to go up and back.
Ovens Mouth Preserve
This trail is located about an hour south of Camden Windward House in Boothbay Harbor. You can pick from Oven’s Mouth East, which is an easy 1.6-mile hike or hop over the foot bridge to Oven’s Mouth West, which is a slightly more aggressive 3.7-mile hike. Plaisted Preserve
This .8-mile looped hike is located about 25 minutes south of Camden Windward House off of North Shore Drive. It is a very easy hike that would be great to take before or after you visit Owl’s Head Lighthouse. About halfway through this trail, you can take a steep decline down to the beach to hunt for treasures or watch the lobster boats go by!
Rockland Breakwater
This one isn’t really a hike as much as it is a walk across a man-made jetty. At the end of the 7/8 of a mile jetty walk sits the Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse. You will essentially be out in the middle of Rockland’s harbor. You will get some great views of the boats passing by and some fresh ocean air. Don’t go if there is a threat of bad weather as you will be the tallest object out there! And…mind the gaps!
Sagamore Farm Trail
This trail is located behind The Lodge at Camden Hills about a mile north of Camden Windward House. Designated parking for hikers is located at The Lodge. The trailhead can be located up the road that goes past the cottages, in the back. There are a few trails you can take most of which are moderately easy. This would be a good one for a quick hike, depending on the trail.
Salt Bay Heritage Trail
Can anybody say Goonie’s Adventure? This loop trail is only accessible 3 hours before and 3 hours after low tide. It takes you along planks in a salt marsh, trails through the forest, an old Sheep herding tunnel (think red balloon and Stephen King), and a spur to the shore of the ancient Indian shell heaps of Glidden Point, and then through some more forest until you are back at the trailhead. The trail is about 2.6 miles and is located about 40 minutes south of Camden Windward House. BRING YOUR BOOTS!
Sears Island
This is a favorite of ours located about 40 miles north of Camden Windward House off of Route 1. It is an island that is connected via causeway to Searsport.
